Wielding her influence as an alien princess, she moves in with him. However, misfortune kicks in again when Lum mistakes Ataru's promise to marry his girlfriend, Shinobu Miyake, as the desire to wed Lum herself, and decides she rather likes the idea. It is a stroke of rare luck for Ataru that the duel is in fact a game of tag, and that his opponent is Lum, daughter of the Oni's leader, who places her personal dignity above victory-as Ataru finds out by seizing Lum's bikini top and with it, victory. When Earth is threatened by a fleet of alien invaders known as the Oni, Ataru is selected to represent humanity in a duel against one of them. I got to spend a few minutes playing the game after receiving the demo, and it was delightfully fun and pretty crazy in terms of the action it provided.Not much is notable about the lecherous Ataru Moroboshi, but his extraordinary bad luck sticks out like the horns in an alien's head. Space Invaders Extreme, however, incorporates a number of things like weapon upgrades (like extreme laser beams, exploding ammunition, and spread shots), multiplayer modes (which we can't detail yet-but they're awesome), and several minigames that appear as you play through the game. The game actually follows the same basic gameplay design that appeared in the original release, with aliens dropping down towards the bottom of the screen while players try to take out the entire wave. After sitting down with the game at GDC, it's safe to say that while Space Invaders Extreme incorporates many of the elements of the original game, it has so many new features in it that it's an entirely new game which will doubtless capture a new legion of fans. Now that we're celebrating the game's 30th anniversary, it only seems appropriate that the game is receiving an upgrade that is a great remix in a number of ways. Space Invaders is one of those games that has won the hearts of millions upon millions of gamers over the decades, something few other games have even come close to doing.
